PIPEDREAMS, New Jersey Merges With THE GREAT PIPE DREAM OF

New Zealand FOR THIS CELEBRATION

Judith Wray, President and founder of Visual Arts League (VAL) was the the moving force behind PIPE DREAMS, New Jersey. The project began about two and a half years ago with 5 students at Paul Robeson School, Commercial Ave. New Brunswick. Two and a half years later there are over 60 pipes from small to 12 ft tall, plus one pipe project involving 150 students from the Dwight D. Eisenhower School in Wykoff, NJ. Pipe designs have come by CD and attached image, or zipped by e-mail.

.

Artists and children have participated locally and from as far away as New Delhi, India; St Petersburg, Russia; Japan; France and across the US.

Henry Sunderland is the fire behind The Great Pipe Dream, NZ. His web site is:  artcar.co.nz. Henry’s project started by involving 22 schools in Christchurch, New Zealand in creating 3 meter high sculptures from waste PVC piping. After an exhibition at Christchurch Botanical Gardens in New Zealand last July, seven of these sculptures were invited to be exhibited at Lincoln Center’s Cork Gallery, NY by the Visual Arts League, January 2003, merging with pipe sculptures from USA and around the World.

THE DREAM CONTINUES to grow. This project is a good example of international sharing in creativity.

The plastic piping sculpture on the trailer is:  “Triflora Polychromas Plasticus, Gigantia”  (or three very large multi-colored plastic flowers). It was constructed by artist / teacher Tony King (tonz@xtra.co.nz ) and the students of Allenvale Special School, Christchurch, New Zealand, a school designed to accommodate children with problems related to Autistic Spectrum Disorder, Behavioral Problems, Downs Syndrome and some with more complex and undiagnosed conditions. The children who worked on this project were from our senior school ranging in age between 11years and 20 years old.

The school has a web site at: www.chch.school.nz/allenvale and the email address is , office@allenvale.school.nz.
